Decorating Christmas cupcakes

As you can tell, I have been in the holiday mood lately.

And going along with that mood, I found some easy Christmas cupcake decorating tutorials posted by MyCupcakeaddiction over on YouTube.

The two videos I wanted to share show you how to easily create Christmas tree cupcakes, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer cupcakes.

I personally like the Rudolph cupcakes better. (They are so cute!) But what is Christmas without a Christmas tree?

So I hope you like these videos, or at least feel inspired to make your own Christmas cupcake creation.

Christmas themed cookie platter upcycle

Not too long ago I made a post about upcycling a serving platter with a fall theme.

A reader wanted to see more of this style, but with a Christmas theme to it.

Well, I finally found one that I thought was worth posting about.  Stay at Home-ista has made a post that shows how they upcycled a cookie platter using a Christmas theme.

Christmas themed cookie platter upcycle with snow flake design. This uses the same painting method as the fall serving platter upcycle, but with some Christmas flair.

Please note that Stay at Home-ista did not mention that you either have to let the paint dry for a certain amount of time, or bake it in the oven to set it. Just make sure that you read all of the directions on the paint you choose to use before starting.

Another important point to note is that this paint is NOT food safe. So make sure that when you paint your dishware, the paint is on the outside, or in an area where your food will not come into contact with it.

Zipper tree ornaments

Jo-Ann's Zipper Tree Ornament FlyerI was recently at Jo-Ann’s and saw this flyer about making zipper tree ornaments. I automatically thought of posting it to this craft blog.

But for those of you who are interested in learning how to make these zipper tree ornaments, but will not be able to attend the lesson at a Jo-Ann store, I found their video posted on YouTube.

They also posted a PDF that includes a list of directions and supplies.

Leg lamp pillow from ‘A Christmas Story’

Leg lamp pillow from the moive "A Christmas Story."I spotted this craft creation yesterday over at a little gray where they made a leg lamp pillow based on the movie A Christmas Story.

First, I was excited to see that someone had made a craft involving the famous leg lamp from A Christmas Story.

Second, I was a little disappointed by it. It is probably just me, but I felt like a few things could have gone better on this.

To start with, I am not sure why they used black ball fringe for the lamp and to surround the pillow. The movie fan in me wanted to shout, “Hey, that’s not right!”

I understand taking a liberty with creativity, and I support that. I just also support representing an iconic item such as the leg lamp with a little more accuracy.

If you want to be closer to the movie version, I would recommend using black chainette fringe.

Also, the leg looked a little, well … stumpy to me.

The good news is that the templates are free to download. And if you are any good at hand drawing or photo editing programs, you can fix this issue by elongating the leg before it meets the shoe.

Again, these issues could just be my point of view. If you love it the way it is, I say go for it!

Chocolate-covered strawberry Christmas tree lights

Chocolate covered strawberry Christmas tree lights on serving platter.

I found this lovely Christmas treat idea over at Chica and Jo.

They show you how to make chocolate-covered strawberry Christmas tree lights for the holidays.

What you will need:

  • Whole strawberries
  • mini marshmallows
  • candy melts in various colors (green, red, blue, orange, etc.)
  • wax paper
  • piping bag with round tip

I love Christmas tree lights (as you can see, I added some to the Craft Away! header for the holiday season) and I love strawberries. So I am thinking this looks like a great project to try!
